The guided tour of the Guembeul Reserve is made on foot or by car, as you choose, with a certified guide, for about 2 hours. It is recommended at 9 am or 5 pm, the coolest hours of the day, and lies very close to Saint-Louis.
On foot or by car
Two ways to discover the reserve: on foot, in a group of 1 to 10 people or of more than 10, or by car, with a price per vehicle. The visit lasts 2 hours. On foot, you are closest to the lagoon and the birds; by car, you cover more ground without effort. The guide is certified, and it is the guide who sets the pace according to what you are watching.
The guiding service is included. Drinks are at your own expense. Bring water, a cap and walking shoes.
What is paid on site
Entry to the reserve is an official fee: it is payable on site, on top of the price, as is the guide, at an indicative rate, and car access into the park for the vehicle option. Entry is free for children under 10.
Guembeul, the stop between town and river mouth
The reserve is in the Saint-Louis region, a few kilometres from Saint-Louis. The Guembeul page gathers the offers for the place, and our Guembeul Reserve page describes the site: a small reserve where you come for the gazelles, tortoises and birds rather than for a big safari. Saint-Louis, a former colonial capital at the mouth of the river, is the natural anchor: you spend the morning or the late afternoon there before returning to the town. If you live in Senegal, it is a two-hour visit that fits into a getaway to Saint-Louis; if you are visiting, an outing to choose according to your energy: on foot for slowness, by car to save time.
To extend your trip
The Langue de Barbarie park lies at the river mouth, and the Djoudj remains the region’s birding destination. For other outings, the guided cultural visits category and the reserves and wildlife parks category widen the choice.
