Wendaye Island: crossing a Diola island on foot, from the pirogue to the rice paddies

A small Diola island village at the mouth of the Casamance River, with no road or cars, reached by pirogue and crossed on foot between rice paddies and mangrove. No monument, no beach: a real day in Lower Casamance.

Do not come to Wendaye Island to “see” something: there is no monument, no postcard beach, no viewpoint. Come to cross it. You land from a pirogue at the end of a bolong (tidal creek), walk up the path between the rice paddies, greet the village, and leave on the other side through the mangrove. That is precisely what makes it worthwhile: on the scale of a walk, Wendaye shows you how the Diola islands at the mouth of the Casamance River live. Half a day is enough to walk across it; understanding it takes a little more humility.

Resident or visitor: a stop, not a destination

Live in Senegal? Wendaye is the stop that gives meaning to a long weekend in Cap Skirring or Oussouye. Rather than yet another beach day, book a pirogue trip through the bolongs and ask for it to call at the island: you will walk through a landscape most Dakar residents have never seen. On activities booked through QFS, you get the resident rate: up to 30% off, enough to do the loop again at the end of the hivernage, when the rice paddies are green.

Just passing through? Understand where you are setting foot: Wendaye is a village, not a developed site. Nobody waits for visitors here with a ticket office or a signposted trail. You are the residents’ guest, and the visit only makes sense with someone who knows the village and its customs. In return, you will get what rushed tours miss: silence, the rhythm of the tide and people at work.

An island that lives by rice

Wendaye belongs to the string of small inhabited islands in Diembéring commune, set in the mouth of the Casamance River between the sea and the channels: Carabane, Ourong, Ehidj, Sifoca, Wendaye, along with the Cachouane peninsula and Gnikine. You always arrive by water. No bridge, no track: the pirogue is the road, and the departure time depends more on the tide than on your watch.

What you cross on foot is the heart of Diola culture: rice growing. Between the village and the mangrove, the rice plots are separated by small earth dykes. The main work is done at the end of the hivernage and the start of the dry season; if you come by then, you will see women and men in the fields, and you will understand the place rice holds in Diola life. The rest of the island’s economy rests on fishing, livestock and produce from the mangrove.

This way of life is under pressure today. Like the whole of Diembéring commune, Wendaye is on the front line facing the sea: salt water is moving inland, the low-lying rice paddies are becoming salty and some plots are being abandoned. Residents and the islands’ associations have taken action to protect the shoreline and replant. Keep that in mind as you walk: the rice paddy beside you is also a battle.

Wendaye and Sifoca actually share the same island, separated by a strip of mangrove and a small stream. That is what makes the crossing so beautiful: you leave one village along a path through the mangrove trees, cross the channel, and arrive in the other. Several hiking routes in Lower Casamance link Cachouane, Wendaye and Sifoca like this in a single day.

Getting there & official fees

Reaching Lower Casamance. From Dakar, there are three options, as for the whole region: a short flight to Cap Skirring or Ziguinchor; the night boat to Ziguinchor; or a long day on the road crossing the Gambia by the Senegambia Bridge. See the Casamance page to choose.

Reaching the landing stage. Two gateways lead to Wendaye, and both end in a pirogue:

  • Elinkine: the fishing port where the road from Oussouye ends; it is also the departure point for Carabane. The simplest gateway if you are staying around Oussouye. See Elinkine.
  • Cachouane: the neighbouring peninsula, from where you cross to Wendaye by pirogue before carrying on on foot. See Cachouane.

Crossing times vary with the starting point, the engine and above all the tide: at low tide, some channels close and you land in the mud. Let the boatman choose the time.

Official fees. No additional official fees: there is no entry charge for the island. You pay for the outing you booked, nothing else. If you would like to support the village, do it through your purchases on the spot rather than through handouts.

What to see

  • The landing: arriving at the end of the bolong, among the mangrove trees, sets the tone. Look at the roots at low tide.
  • The rice paddies: the path to the village runs alongside the plots and their dykes; it is the island’s most telling landscape.
  • The village: huts, yards, shade trees, a life that does not revolve around the visitor. Greet people, and let yourself be guided.
  • The honey: beekeeping is part of the island’s economy. Depending on the route, the outing may stop at a village beekeeper’s; that is your chance to buy straight from the producer.
  • The way to Sifoca: the path through the mangrove and the channel to cross to reach the island’s other village.

Nearby

Wendaye combines naturally with its neighbours at the river mouth. Cachouane, just to the north-west, is where the crossing starts. Carabane Island, the region’s former colonial capital, deserves a night of its own; Ourong Island is the commune’s other small island. On the mainland, the village of Mlomp and its two-storey houses, then Oussouye, heart of the Diola kingdom. On the ocean side, Cap Skirring and Pointe Saint-Georges. For the big picture, the Casamance page, and for the gateway city, Ziguinchor.

The right time

PeriodWhat happensOur view
November–FebruaryDry, cool season; end of the rice harvest early in the periodThe best window for walking and boating
March–MayDry and hotter, rice paddies restingVery good, provided you set off early
June–OctoberHivernage: rain, work in the rice paddies, very green mangroveFor lovers of green landscapes, if you can live with rain and mosquitoes

During the day, set off early: the light is soft, the heat bearable for walking and the water often calmer. The pirogue ride back in the late afternoon, when the sun goes down over the bolongs and the waterbirds head back to the mangrove, is the best moment of the trip.

Practical tips

  • Footwear: sandals that stay on your feet and can handle water and mud; you often land with wet feet.
  • Sun and water: hat, sunscreen, plenty of water; there is nowhere easy to stock up along the path.
  • Mosquitoes: repellent and long sleeves at dusk, especially during the hivernage.
  • On the water: insist on a life jacket, particularly for children.
  • Cash: bring small notes; purchases on the island are paid in cash.
  • Respect: modest clothing, greetings first, and ask before photographing any person or house. Some places, trees or groves are sacred: do not enter unless invited.
  • Rice paddies: walk on the dykes you are shown, never in the plots.
  • Safety: the tourist bases of Lower Casamance can be visited normally; check your country’s official travel advice before you leave and travel by day.
